Mark your calendars for Friday October 7, 2011, 7PM for our fifth season kick-off concert with Pachora, a Brooklyn-based Balkan/gypsy/world-folk/jazz quartet. We’ll be hosting the band while they are on tour in the area for the Chicago Guitar Festival.

This concert celebrates not only four years of concerts but for the total of $20, 231 raised from our at the door donations, $4,183 of which came from our forth season–all that went to help the poor and homeless via the Heartside Fund and Heartside Music Together.

We had a unique last concert of the season with Utake, a group led by jazz pianist and composer Kurt Ellenberger who was joined by Rob Foster on shakuhachi flutes, Ric Troll on percussion and guest soprano Claire Vangelisti.

In addition to their cool program, the group also performed two premiers that night composed by Kurt and commissioned by MAJIC.

Our March concert was appropriately placed in the first week of lent with coloratura soprano Diane Penning’s Sacred Space concert, a performance featuring songs, readings, and original compositions by local sacred music composer Nicholas Palmer and readings by raconteur extraordinaire Tom Good.

Thanks to the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids for making this their second concert hosted this year and for providing a wonderful reception!

Congratulations to Steve Talaga for winning the WYCE Jammies Award in best jazz album of the year for his feature length jazz composition on the CD Heartside Sketches! This work was commissioned by Bethlehem Lutheran Church’s MAJIC Concert Series and was premiered live on their 2010 season.

The February’s MAJIC concert brought an exciting art and music combination with the Chicago based group Eastern Blok and Grand Rapids based artist Alynn Guerra. The energetic and rich compositions of Eastern Blok complemented Guerra’s striking black and white block prints. Be sure to keep up with these artists’ projects!

It was an honor to have Ralston Bowles joined by Jack Leaver and Mark Lavengood on the MAJIC series this year!

Grand Rapid’s own Embellish performed a holiday concert for the MAJIC series in December!

It was a treat for them to perform in their favorite semi-circle formation and many of the audience members enjoyed learning about their incredible collection of bells.
